Ypsilanti packs a surprising amount of character into a small footprint — historic brick, a river running right through it, a lake on the edge of town, nature preserves just past the city limits, and a college campus. It's grounded and genuinely local, and it suits families and kids who want a session with real personality instead of a posed backdrop.

Depot Town

Ypsi's historic district — brick streets, colorful storefronts, and murals — is full of texture and warmth. The buildings hold evening light beautifully, and there's enough variety in one block that we can change the whole feel of a session just by crossing the street. Riverside & Frog Island Parks

These connected parks along the Huron River give us water, tall trees, and open green right beside downtown — an easy, pretty natural setting minutes from the brick. Because they're walkable from Depot Town, we can shoot both in one session and get two completely different looks without anyone getting back in the car. Best for: families, kids, maternity · Best season: late spring through fall

LeFurge Woods Nature Preserve

Just outside town, LeFurge is all restored prairie, wildflower meadows, and boardwalks through the grass. In late summer the fields fill in with white wildflowers and it becomes one of my favorite places in Washtenaw County to photograph a family. I shot the Parsons family's wildflower session here, and honestly the meadow did most of the work. Best for: families, maternity, couples · Best season: mid-to-late summer (wildflowers)

North Bay Park (Ford Lake)

Out on Ford Lake, North Bay's boardwalks and wide lake views open everything up — big water, big sky, and gorgeous golden-hour light coming off the lake. It's the most expansive-feeling spot in Ypsi, and the boardwalks make it easy going for grandparents and strollers alike. Best for: couples, families, engagements · Best season: summer evenings

Eastern Michigan University & the Water Tower

The EMU campus and the iconic Ypsilanti Water Tower add collegiate character and a recognizable local landmark — a nice touch for senior and graduation portraits, especially for anyone with a connection to the school. Weekend mornings are quietest. Best for: seniors, graduation, headshots · Best season: any

A note on light. Ypsi is a golden-hour town. Depot Town's brick warms up beautifully in the last hour before sunset, and the lake catches that same light from the opposite direction — so if we start downtown and finish at the water, we get two very different moods out of a single evening.
